Introduction to Using Text in Your Classroom By enabling the Text Formatting Editor (TFE) you can apply word processing-style formatting in your conference notes and other online documents. Many people turn it on and leave it on, but if you have a particularly slow internet connection, or if you cannot allow Sun's JVM on your computer, then you can use the Basic TFE in Conferences and (Private) Messaging, or Plain/HTML text box everywhere else. Reminder: The Spring 2011 Text Formatting Editor (TFE) upgrade was not applied to archived classes. You will have problems editing text using the TFE in these older classes if you have already upgraded your Java. Why aren't Plain Text/HTML text boxes available everywhere? WebTycho is evolving away from Plain Text/HTML text boxes, and replacing them with two versions (advanced and basic) of the Text Formatting Editor. The basic version of the TFE now provides the java-free access that Plain Text boxes do, but with more formatting options. Don't use different kinds of text boxes for the same document. If you edit any document, whether created by yourself or by a classmate, then use the same method used when it was created. Before you begin, check your Account Preferences to see whether you have enabled or disabled the text Formatting Editor (TFE). This is especially important for collaborative documents created in study groups. Don't worry, we'll warn you before you go too far. If you forget to check Account Preferences and try to edit a document with a different type of text box, you will receive a pop-up warning and be given the opportunity to enable or disable the TFE before you proceed. |
